Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2020

For those who have followed me for a while, you may be familiar with my annual blog series hi-lighting the importance of sexual assault awareness and prevention. April is set aside by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center as SAAM or Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The month is usually filled with informative and educational events bringing awareness to resources, survivors and their stories.

It was actually during SAAM 2015 that I chose to share the details of my own survivor story with the world for the first time. The event has held a special place in my heart ever since. I’ve faithfully participated each year on different levels. Some years I’ve been more involved than others. This year I feel a bit conflicted launching my series as the world faces a different kind of crisis.

This year society’s collective consciousness is overwhelmed with terrifying news and statistics regarding Covid19 and the global pandemic. Many people are also isolated inside their homes and struggling with their mental health. It’s not a good time to bring awareness to other traumatic events and circumstances.

So, after many hours of debate I’ve decided to cancel my series for SAAM this year. Of course awareness is still extremely important, especially if we want to move forward and shift the view point of our patriarchal short comings. I’m not giving up my voice, nor will I ever stop speaking on behalf of survivors. I’m just stepping aside for a moment as humanity weathers this pandemic storm.

Thank you for understanding,

-Becca
